Seniors, Seagraves lead South Point to win over St. Joseph

SOUTH POINT — Now, this is the way to celebrate Senior Night.

The South Point Pointers enjoyed Senior Night by beating the St. Joseph Flyers 12-2 in six innings Monday.

“It was Senior Night and, as they have all year, the seniors stepped it up and got the job done,” said Pointers coach Marty Patrick.

South Point (17-1) hosts Nelsonville-York Tuesday at 5 p.m. in the Division III sectional tournament.

St. Joseph (16-4) hosts Latham Western winner at 5 p.m. Thursday in the Division IV sectional tournament. Western beat Manchester 17-7.

“Our effort was better, but we didn’t hit the ball,” said Flyers coach Greg Bryant. “South Point is 17-1 for a reason. They’re solid up and down the lineup.”

Jacob Seagraves went the distance for the win as he struck out seven, walked just two and allowed only three hits.

The Flyers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning on a double by Caleb Blackburn, a walk to Chad Harvey, a wild pitch and a passed ball.

The Pointers scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead.

Trenton Moore reached on a two-base error, Chase McWhorter walked and Tyler Smith singled in a run with McWhorter scoring on a throwing error. Zach Jenkins had a base hit to score Smith.

In the fourth, Smith singled, Seagraves and Heath Bridges hit into a fielder’s choice, Jenkins was safe on an error and Brown had an RBI single.

St. Joseph got a run back in the top of the fifth inning to trail 4-2.

Harvey singled and came all the way to third base on a sacrifice bunt by Michael Basedow. He scored when Tre Stambaugh singled.

But the Pointers answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning.

Anthony Ross singled, Moore walked, McWhorter and Smith each hit into a fielder’s choice as a run scored. Seagraves got a base hit to drive in two runs.

South Point got five more runs in the sixth inning.

Brown singled and Hughes and Moore walked to load the bases.

After a ground out, Moore walked to load the bases and McWhorter singled in a run. Smith doubled to empty the bases.

Smith stole third base and came home on a hit by Seagraves to end the game.
