Those latex gloves may have been a bit too big for his hands, but that didn’t stop five-year-old Jordan Matthew Melvin from making a contribution to his community Saturday morning.

Melvin, his dad, Chris Melvin and brother, Cody Melvin, were among the several dozen people who took part in the annual River Sweep. The Melvins came with Boy Scout Troop 103, of Deering.

“We heard about it through the troop and thought it would be something nice to do,” Chris Melvin said.

The Moose Teen Club, members of the Sheridan Freewill Baptist Church youth group and Lawrence County Juvenile Court community service workers were among those who attacked the dirt and debris at the Ironton Center Street boat landing. Volunteers also cleaned the South Point boat dock. No figures are available yet on how much trash was collected.

The annual event was sponsored by locally the Lawrence-Scioto Solid Waste Management District and regionally by the Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission.
