ROME TOWNSHIP — Round one goes to the Pointers.
In a battle for first place in the Ohio Valley Conference, the South Point Pointers beat the Fairland Dragons 5-2 Friday in a game shortened to five innings due to the weather.
South Point is now 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the OVC. Fairland is 5-2 and 2-1.
“We didn’t play well enough to win,” Fairland coach Roger Snyder said. “We made some base running mistakes and we made some errors.”
The Dragons took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Zach Jordan reached on a fielder’s choice, moved up on a bad pickoff throw and came home on a hit by Tyler Thackston.
The Pointers answered with two runs in the second inning.
Chase McWhorter singled, went all the way to third base on two passed balls and scored when Tyler Smith reached on a two-out error. An outfield error allowed Smith to score.
The Pointers led 2-1 heading into the fifth inning when they scored three runs.
With one out, Chris Brown walked, stole second and scored on a hit by Beau Weed.
A passed ball moved Weed to second and he scored on a single by Trenton Moore. McWhorter and Seagraves followed with base hits for the final run.
Fairland tried to rally in the bottom of the inning but could manage only one run.
Jordan walked and Chris Barnett unloaded his second double of the game. Thackston walked but Seagraves struck out the final two batters to end the game.
Anthony Ross got the win and Seagraves picked up the save.
