SOUTH POINT — OK, vacation time is over. Back to work.

That’s just what the South Point Pointers did Tuesday as they made quick work of the Coal Grove Hornets with a 56-29 Ohio Valley Conference win.

“We’ve been off for 10 days so it was nice to play again,” Pointers coach Gary Norris said. “We did a nice job offensively and defensively.”

The Pointers took a half-game lead in the OVC over Fairland with a 6-1 record. They are 11-3 overall.

South Point went up 13-4 in the first quarter. Adam Bare was 4 of 6 from the foul line for the Hornets who did not make a field goal in the quarter.

Chase McWhorter scored 15 points in the first half — 9 in the second quarter — as South Point built a 25-10 lead.

Beau Weed scored 7 points in the third quarter to match Coal Grove’s total as the Pointers pulled away to a 39-17 lead.

South Point did not play any starters in the fourth quarter and outscored the Hornets 17-12. Zach Murphy got 6 points for Coal Grove.

McWhorter also had 12 rebounds to go with his 17 points. Weed added 12 points while Zach Stevens had 4 steals and 7 rebounds.

Coal Grove was guilty of 27 turnovers.

“We had a lot of opportunities early but we could take advantage of it. We did a good job on knowing where Brown was, but McWhorter is a nice player and he hurt us,” Hornets coach Mike Waller said.

“South Point was very patient and well-schooled and eventually they found McWhorter open.”

Murphy had 8 points to lead the Hornets (0-16, 0-7). Bare had 7 rebounds and Tyler Branch 4.
