Budget bill expands Homestead exemption

As part of the recently passed state budget bill, the Homestead Exemption Program accessible to more people.

Lawrence County Deputy Auditor Laura McComas said with the passage of House Bill 119, the Ohio Legislature has expanded the program that gives a reduction in property taxes to all senior citizens and permanently disabled homeowners.

“It used to be you had to either be 65 or older or totally disabled and be able to meet income guidelines,” she explained. “There is no income limit on it now.”

Every senior citizen or permanently disabled homeowner will receive an exemption of $25,000 on the appraised value of their home from property taxes on a single-family residence, regardless of their income.

McComas said right now, 3,615 Lawrence County homeowners are enrolled in the homestead program.

Enrollment dates for new applicants who were previously not eligible are July 2- Oct. 1, 2007.

Applicants can apply for exemption in the year they turn 65 as long as they own and occupy the house as of Jan. 1 in the year they file. Homeowners who are currently receiving the homestead reduction will automatically be included in the expanded program and do not need to contact the auditor’s office.

The requirements under the new program for proof of age include a photocopy of picture ID such as driver’s license, State of Ohio ID card or a current or expired passport.
