Would-be political candidates, take note: Thursday is the deadline to file your petition if you plan to run for elective office in November. It is also the deadline for placing any issues and options on the ballot.

Lawrence County Board of Elections Director Eric Bradshaw said mayoral offices, village and city council seats, township trustees’ and clerks’ positions are up for re-election. There are also seats on the Lawrence County Educational Service Center Board as well as local school boards that are also up for grabs this year.

Bradshaw said two options pertaining to alcohol sales may be on the ballot this year.

“One is for alcohol sales at the Wal-Mart. They are circulating petitions but they haven’t filed them yet,” Bradshaw said. “And there is one for the village of Proctorville’s Speedway. Both are for carryout (sales).”

In the mayoral races, two men have picked up petitions to run for mayor of Hanging Rock but neither has yet filed papers: Vic Hopper Jr., and incumbent Mayor Chris Davidson.

In Ironton, three men have filed documents to run for the city’s highest office: former mayor Bob Cleary, former council member Bob Vaughn and council member Rich Blankenship.

Additionally, four other men have picked up petitions to run but have not returned them yet. Incumbent Mayor John Elam picked up petitions but later decided not to seek reelection; council member Butch Huff also started the process but later opted not to pursue the mayor’s office. Walt Butler and Leonard Battise have also picked up petitions to run for mayor but have not yet returned them.

In Coal Grove, incumbent Mayor Larry McDaniel and former mayor Tom McKnight have both filed to run for that village post.

South Point Mayor William Gaskin is the only person who has so far sought that village’s highest office.

In Chesapeake, incumbent mayor Jimmie Justice and Dick Gilpin have both filed petitions to run for mayor in that village.

In Proctorville, incumbent Mayor Jim Buchanan has filed to seek re-election; Billy Jones has picked up a petition but has not filed it yet.

In Athalia, the only person who has picked up a petition to run for mayor in the incumbent, Jim Chapman.

The deadline for filing is 4 p.m. at the Board of Elections office, first floor of the Lawrence County Courthouse.
