Before the game, Ironton coach Bob Lutz told his players they needed to do three things to win the game.

Block, tackle, and take care of the ball.

“Obviously, we didn’t do any of the three,” said Lutz after the Fighting Tigers suffered a 56-0 loss at the hands of the Olentangy Liberty Patriots.

Instead of copying Brinks Home Security, Ironton took care of the football a lot like Britney Spears does her children. The Fighting Tigers had six turnovers that included three fumbles and three interceptions.

“We practiced pretty good this week and we felt better going into this game than last week. We didn’t play well and Olentangy has a nice team. Their quarterback is pretty good,” said Lutz.

Patriots quarterback Ryan Cypret was 10 of 15 passing for 145 yards and three touchdowns. Liberty had 293 total yards.

Kyle Kready ran the opening kickoff back 66 yards to the Ironton 17 and two plays later Ryan Eggleston went 5 yards for the score. Todd Henderly kicked the first of seven conversions.

Ironton (0-2) fumbled on its next series at its own 42 and the Patriots took advantage of the mistake.

Cypret passed for 15 yards and Eggleston ran 27 yards for the touchdown on the next play to make it 14-0.

The Fighting Tigers fumbled yet again on the first play following the kickoff, but this time the defense forced a 37-yard field goal attempt that went wide left.

After Ironton went three-and-out, Liberty drove 46 yards in eight plays capped by Eggleston’s 3-yard run.

The Patriots running back was tackled hard by Bubby Johnson at the goal line on the play and left the game. He did not return.

Ironton drove to the Patriots 30 only to Jason Kissel pick off a pass and run it back 52 yards to set up a 21-yard scoring pass to Trevor Vanscoy.

The Fighting Tigers came back with another drive highlighted by a 35-yard pass to Nick Lewis to the Liberty 34. But an interception on the next play by Justin Welch killed the drive and put the Patriots at the Ironton 38.

Cypret completed three straight passes, the final to Vanscoy for 7 yards and the score and it was 35-0.

The six Liberty touchdown of the half came on a 66-yard punt return by Kready with 4:19 on the clock.

“Our kicking game was pretty good last week. We just didn’t hustle down the field,” Lutz said.

Cypret threw his third touchdown pass with 4:39 left in the third quarter on a 7-yard toss to Vanscoy on third-and-goal.

The Patriots capped the scoring with just 56 seconds to play on an 11-yard run by Jordan Whitner.

Lewis was one of the bright spots offensively for Ironton as he caught two passes for 49 yards. Major Brice ran 10 times for 33 yards and Tony Murphy got 32 yards on 11 attempts as Ironton managed 151 total yards.
