PORTSMOUTH — A nice ending.
Or is it just a beginning.
The Ironton Fighting Tigers golf team, with only one senior, finished the regular season Tuesday with a win over Portsmouth on the Trojans home course at the Elks Lodge Country Club.
Ironton had a 166 team score for a 12-stroke win over Portsmouth.
“I’m proud of all of them. We started the season with a lot of kids and they all worked hard and improved. They did pretty much everything I asked them to do,” said coach Jeff Kerns.
“Now we start a new season. We have the league match and then the postseason. Hopefully the experience they got will carry over.”
Junior Nathan Kerns claimed medalist honors with an even par 36. It was the 10th time this season Kerns has been medalist at a match.
Behind Kerns were freshmen Andy Holtzapfel and Jonathan Williams who each carded a 43. Josh Cooke had a 44 to round out the top four scores.
Ironton (35-26) plays at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Southeastern Ohio Athletic League tournament at Valley View Golf Course in Lancaster.
Ironton 166: Nathan Kerns 36 (medalist), Andy Holtzapfel 43, Jonathan Williams 43, Josh Cooke 44, Mason Weisgarber 45, Michael Filkins 52.
Portsmouth 178: Stu Doll 43, Dowdy 44, Harcha 45, Lacey 46, Sanford 50, Summer 51.
