Ironton welcomes 16 schools to competition

The sound of music will fill the air this weekend at Tanks Memorial Stadium.

The Buckeye Classic marching band competition will bring 16 bands from as far away as Pickerington to showcase their talents.

“We’re pleased with that (the number of entrants) and we’re always pleased with the turnout,” Ironton Band Boosters Vice President Carla Marshall said. “Green is having a competition the same day so some of the bands are going there in the morning and then coming here.”

The bands that will take part in the Buckeye Classic are Fort Frye High School, Beverly; East High School, Sciotoville;

Dawson-Bryant High School; South Point High School; Wellston High School; Wahama Jr./Sr. High, Mason, W.Va.; Portsmouth West High School; Rock Hill High School; Vinton County High School; Meigs High School, Pomeroy; Northwest High School, McDermott; Green High School; Hurricane High School, Hurricane, W.Va.; Pickerington High School, Pickering-ton;

Stebbins High School, Riverside, and Ironton High School (exibition).

Competition begins at 5:00 p.m. and awards will follow at 9:30 p.m.

Money made from the Buckeye Classic will be used to pay for the Ironton High School Marching Band’s December trip to Florida. The band will perform at the Gator Bowl.
