Panthers do enough to get win

LUCASVILLE — Big plays were at a premium, but there were at the right time.

The Chesapeake Panthers came up with enough big plays to slip past the Lucasville Valley Indians 24-23 Friday.

“We made enough plays to win, no extra ones,” said Chesapeake coach Phil Davis.

Lucasville outgained the Panthers 234 to 153. Each team had two fumbles but the Panthers Clinton Baise and Aaron Donahoe came up with key interceptions and Brad Wiley blocked the potential game-tying extra point to preserve the win.

Chesapeake evened its record at 2-2 with the win while Valley slipped to 1-3. Davis was happy to win, but his praise stopped there.

“It was great win because we weren’t playing well. We played with no emotion in the first half. We fumbled the snap to give them a field goal, we didn’t tackle well, we just didn’t play well,” said Davis.

The Indians went up 3-0 on a 30-yard field goal by Evan Richard in the first quarter.

“They had four shots from the 4-yard line and had to settle for a field goal. Our defense kept making plays,” said Davis.

Chesapeake took the lead on a 45-yard pass from Aaron Donahoe to Joe Riley. Donahoe threw to Thomas Lewis for the conversion and it was 8-3.

Lucasville opened up a 17-8 lead in the second quarter on a 3-yard run by Matt McClain and an 11-yard pass from Kyle Hickerson to Mike Fulks.

The Indians fumbled the second half kickoff and Chesapeake turned the recovery into a 1-yard scoring run by Donahoe. Heath Hazlett caught the conversion pass.

Donahoe came up with an interception to set up a 10-yard scoring run by Drew Blake and Ryan Reynolds’ conversion run put the Panthers up 24-17.

The Panthers had goal line stand in the fourth quarter, but then fumbled and Valley scored on a 10-yard pass from Hickerson to McClain.

Valley blocked the punt with two minutes to play, but Baise intercepted a pass in the end zone with less than a minute to go.
