COAL GROVE — From 1945-47, Army had a running tandem of Felix “Doc” Blanchard who was known as was Mr. Inside and Heisman trophy winner Glenn Davis who was called Mr. Outside.

Chris Brammer and Matt Cooper may not be in that class, but you might not be able to convince the Chesapeake Panthers after the duo helped the Coal Grove Hornets run to a 28-6 Ohio Valley Conference win Friday.

Brammer carried 10 times for 109 yards and Cooper ran 17 times for 98 yards.

“We know we have some good athletes back there. Anyone of those kids can step up and have a good ballgame. We know Chris is capable of it. Coop has been consistent all year,” said Lucas.

The Hornets offense churned out 371 yards rushing while the defense held Chesapeake to 140 total yards including 6 passing.

The only negative was seven penalties for 45 yards.

“Our kids executed. We overcame the penalties. The kids were aggressive. We played with intensity and we played aggressive football,” said Lucas.

The win was the first by the Hornets over the Panthers since 1997, thus regaining possession of the Little Brown Jug.

Coal Grove is now 4-2 and stays in the league chase at 1-1. Chesapeake slipped to 2-5 and 0-2 in the league.

Turnovers plagued the Panthers again as they lost three fumbles and a bad snap on a punt led to a safety.

“We keep helping teams out and you can’t do that and expect to win,” said Panthers coach Phil Davis. “We’ll made good plays on first and second downs, then give up a big play on third down. We’re still not consistent.”

After the Hornets recovered a Chesapeake fumble in the first quarter, Jacob Jenkins ran 31 yards for a touchdown and a 7-0 lead.

Coal Grove marched 81 yards in eight plays capped by Brammer’s 17-yard run just before the half and it was 13-0.

A bad snap on a punt into the end zone forced the Panthers to fall on the ball for a safety and it was 15-0.

After the free kick, Cooper ran 5 yards for a touchdown and the lead jumped to 22-0.

The Panthers turned Coal Grove’s only turnover into a their lone score, a 1-yard run by Aaron Donahoe.

Coal Grove answered with a 19-yard score by Brammer and it was 28-6.
