Kerns 14th at state golf tournament

COLUMBUS —Nathan Kerns is among lofty company.

The Ironton Fighting Tigers talented golfer tied for 14th place in the Division II state golf tournament held at the Ohio State University Gray Course Saturday.

Kerns finished with a two-day total of 148 after rounds of 72 on Friday and 76 on Saturday. He tied with Scott Smith of Hunting Valley University School and Paul Cene of Youngstown Ursuline in the 72-man field.

Kerns, a junior, qualified as an individual for the state tournament after earning medalist honors at the district tournament. He was medalist of 14 tournaments this season including the sectional and Southeastern Ohio Athletic League tournaments.

Among the individuals who qualified without a team, Kerns placed fifth.

The overall medalist was junior Mac McLaughlin of Hunting Valley with a 137 total. Runner-up Mike Oberschmidt of Cincinnati Archbishop McNicholas was the only other golfer to break the 140 total as he shot a 139.
