Lady Bobcats beat Eagles

BEAVER — Better play equals better results.

After losing their opener by just 3 points, the Green Lady Bobcats gave a better performance and it paid off as they slipped past the Eastern Lady Eagles 50-48 Monday in a Southern Ohio Conference game.

“We played better, we took care of the ball better, and we shot the ball better, but we still have some room to improve,” said Green coach Dale Royse.

“It’s nice to get that first win. It wasn’t pretty, but if you can go on the road and win, that’s nice.”

Abbey Barrett had 14 points and eight rebounds to lead the Lady Bobcats. Adrianna Blankenship had 12 points, 10 rebounds, and five steals to aid the victory.

Eastern took a 10-8 lead in the first quarter, but Blankenship scored eight of Green’s 13 points in the second quarter to cut the deficit to 22-21 at the break.

Barrett scored 11 points in the third quarter as Green took a 38-37 lead.

The Lady Bobcats outscored Eastern 12-11 in the fourth quarter to get the win.

Green hosts East Thursday at 6 p.m. in a varsity only game.

WILLOW WOOD — Forget the opposition. The Symmes Valley Lady Vikings are spending their games battling against themselves.

The Lady Vikings had 34 turnovers including 22 in the second half as they suffered a 35-33 Monday to the Fairview (Ky.) Lady Eagles.

“We basically were our own worst enemy. We made too many turnovers to win tonight,” said Lady Vikings coach Lisa Bryant. “We can not give any team the ball back that many times and expect to win.”

Symmes Valley led 31-30 with 30 seconds to play, but Fairview got the ball back and scored to take the lead.

A turnover followed and the Lady Eagles hit two foul shots to lead 35-31 with 1.6 seconds left.

“I thought we did a good job defensively,” said Bryant. “(Jessie) Morris is getting better with each outing. Jennie Wilson played very good defensively tonight and Kayla Ross came off the bench to give us a good defensive effort.”

Morris led the Lady Vikings with 11 points and six rebounds. Sarah Ashworth added 8 points while Wilson and Ross had six rebounds each.

Brandy Mills scored 19 points to lead Fairview.

The game was tied 9-9 after the first quarter. Symmes Valley then pulled ahead 15-10 at the break by holding Fairview to one point in the second quarter.

But Fairview rallied to take a 24-19 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Symmes Valley plays at Portsmouth Notre Dame Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in a varsity only game.
