Hot-shooting Tomcats top RH

ASHLAND, Ky. — There’s something about the Rock Hill Redmen that make the Ashland Tomcats prolific shooters.

Last season, Ashland shot 60 percent in beating the Redmen. On Friday night the Tomcats hit 53 percent from the field en route to a 70-42 win over the Redmen.

“When they start hitting shots, you think you’re not guarding them. I went back and watched the film and our halfcourt defense was where it was supposed to be, they just knocked the shots down. We hand a hand in their face,” said Redmen coach Adam Simpson

Rock Hill was 15 of 37 from the floor for 40 percent, but the Tomcats connected on 26 of 49 shots and also went 14 of 16 at the foul line.

Danny Coleman was 7 of 13 from the field to lead Ashland with 16 points. Matt Thomas scored 15 and Chris Johnson grabbed six rebounds.

Rock Hill (0-2) was led by Mark DePriest with 13 points. Nathan Davenport added 10 points and Aaron Butler had 9 points.

Rock Hill trailed 8-4 with two minutes left in the first quarter when Ashland went on a 6-0 run to lead 14-4.

The pace picked up in the second quarter as the Tomcats outscored Rock Hill 22-16 to take a 36-20 halftime advantage.

Ashland (1-0) outscored the Redmen 34-22 in the second half as they continued to pull away.
