MARIETTA — Someone must have handed out a coupon for free points.

The Marietta Lady Tigers used free throws to slip past the Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers 53-49 Friday night in a Southeastern Ohio Athletic League game.

Ironton trailed just 47-46 with 1:15 to play, but Sarah Grosel sank six free throws over the final 37 seconds as Marietta rallied for the win.

Marietta (3-1, 1-1) was 14 of 23 from the foul line for the game.

The loss was the first of the season for Ironton in three games and evened the Lady Tigers’ SEOAL record at 1-1.

Ironton’s Jessica Waddle led all scorers with 25 points including three shots from behind the arc. Mercedes Crockrel had 13 points and seven rebounds.

Waddle and Brea Tackett had two assists each and Alex Taylor led with three steals.

Kristin Ross scored 11 points, Molly Miracle had 10 points, and Grosel 9 to lead a balanced Marietta offense.

Marietta took a 15-10 first quarter lead and was up by 10 points when Waddle and Crockrel sparked a 12-0 run for a 24-22 Ironton lead.

Marietta went back on top 26-24 only to have Crockrel convert two foul shots with 17 seconds on the clock and the game was 26-26 at the break.

Ironton was down 35-34 after three quarters before coming back to take a 45-41 lead.

Miracle hit two straight baskets to tie the game and a basket by Ross put Marietta ahead.

Ironton got within 47-46 on a foul shot by Crockrel, but Ironton had to foul and Grosel kept making free throws.
