Panthers topple Trojans; Peebles holds off Hornets

PORTSMOUTH — The Chesapeake Panthers got it and wouldn’t give it up.

Chesapeake took an early lead it wouldn’t relinquish en route to beating the Portsmouth Trojans 74-62 Saturday and giving Ryan Davis his first win as the Panthers head coach.

Chesapeake took a 19-14 lead in the first quarter as Tyler Shoemaker scored 6 points.

Shoemaker scored 6 more in the second quarter and it was 36-30 at the break.

Kyle Webb scored 13 of his points in the third quarter as Chesapeake extended its lead to 56-44.

The Panthers sealed the win by converting 14-of-23 free throws in the fourth quarter.

Webb led the Panthers (1-1) with a career-high 24 points. Shoemaker had 21 points and Nathan Copley added 10 points.

Anthony Williams scored 22 points and Andrew Bendolph 17 to lead Portsmouth (1-2).

COAL GROVE — The Peebles Indians held off a furious fourth quarter comeback and slipped past the Coal Grove Hornets 57-53 Saturday night.

Coal Grove trailed 49-36 at the end of the third quarter but outscored Peebles 17-8 in the fourth quarter.

Eric Edens led the Hornets with 21 points while Wayne Sparks and Reese Rymer scored 12 each.

Blake Justice had 19 points and Tyler Arnold 11 to lead Peebles (2-0).

Coal Grove, coming off its first win in more than a year with a season-opening victory over Lewis County, Ky., (38-30), hosts Portsmouth West on Tuesday.
