LLOYD, Ky. — Elvis sang, “We’re caught in a trap. I can’t walk out.”
The Fairland Dragons got caught in the Greenup County Musketeers run-and-gun trap, but instead of walking they ran out of it for an 111-83 win Tuesday.
“We told our kids not to fall into their trap of how they play and then you have a few turnovers,” said Fairland coach Chad Belville who won his 100th career game.
“We got careless with the ball and had eight turnovers in the second quarter.”
Fairland had its own fast pace in the first quarter as Michael Lamb scored 15 points and the Dragons took a 34-22 lead.
The lead was 20 points in the second quarter but Fairland turnovers coupled with three 3-pointers cut the lead to 54-45 at the break.
Greenup County was 11-of-19 from behind the arc for the game.
Chris Ward hit a key 3-pointer to ignite Fairland’s offense in the third quarter. Lamb scored 10 more points and the Dragons outscored the Musketeers 28-19 to take an 82-64 lead.
Dustin Bumgardner scored 6 points and Adam Berry had 5 more as Fairland outscored Greenup 29-19 in the fourth quarter.
In the second half, Fairland was 10-of-20 from the field in the third quarter and 12-of-19 in the fourth quarter.
Greenup was just 6-of-23 in the third quarter and 5-of-13 in the final stanza.
“Greenup likes a game that goes up and down the floor. They try to wear you out,” said Belville. “But this just shows we’re in good shape and we have depth. All 12 of our guys played and contributed.”
Lamb finished with a career-high 37 points to go with seven rebounds. Cole Hatfield had 20 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists. Bumgardner had 16 points and 10 rebounds and Berry scored 12 points, 7 in the second half.
Belville shrugged off his milestone win that gave Fairland a 3-0 record on the season.
“It’s consistency and good players,” said Belville.
Fairland plays at Rock Hill Friday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
