CHESAPEAKE — Forget the volume. Pump up the pressure.

The Chesapeake Lady Panthers increased their defensive pressure as they beat the Coal Grove Lady Hornets 58-35 Thursday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

“The key tonight was our ability to play defense. Our intensity and our pressure was really good,” said Lady Panthers coach Sammy Gue.

“Tonight was a huge win for our girls. Coal Grove is a very good team and we have a lot of respect for them. I’m so proud of our girls’ effort.”

Chesapeake (3-2, 2-0 OVC) had four players in double figures. Rachel Harris and Courtney Heffner scored 16 each while Sarah Mayo and Kimmie Bennett had 14 apiece.

Jordyn Cox led Coal Grove (2-3, 1-1) with a game-high 18 points. Brittany Harrison added 12.

“We didn’t play well at all. We didn’t play defense and we didn’t shoot well at all,” said Lady Hornets coach Nick Miller whose team was 14-of-45 from the field for 31 percent.

“But give credit to Chesapeake. They have some nice young kids.”

Harris scored eight points in the first quarter as Chesapeake grabbed a 14-9 lead.

Bennett’s four points in the second quarter enabled the Lady Panthers to go ahead 24-17 at the break.

Cox got seven of Coal Grove’s nine points in the third quarter, but Heffner and Harris combined for 11 as the lead went to 38-26.

Heffner got six more points in the fourth quarter as the Lady Panthers outscored the Hornets 20-9.

“Sarah Mayo did a great job taking care of the ball, Heffner did a nice job defensively, Rachel Harris showed tremendous leadership and Bennett was a beast on the boards again,” said Gue.
