PEDRO — Size was the theme for Rock Hill Redmen coach Adam Simpson last weekend.

On Friday night, Simpson’s wife gave birth to a son, Benjamin Patrick. The size of his new son was important news for Simpson, but the size of his Redmen proved to be an important part of their game with the St. Joseph Flyers.

Rock Hill (2-4) used its size advantage to shoot 20-of-34 from the field for 59 percent en route to a 54-44 win over the Flyers.

“Our size was the difference. We shot well and that was because of our size,” said Simpson.

“(Coach Kevin Sheridan) had a good game plan. His kids played hard and the game was closer than the score.”

Mark DePriest led the Redmen with 16 points, six rebounds and two steals. Matt Matney and Aaron Butler added 10 points each while Nathan Davenport had six rebounds, five assists, and two steals.

St. Joseph (2-4) was led by Chad Harvey with 20 points. David Crossan had 10 points while Caleb Blackburn added eight points and four rebounds. Joey Basedow also had four rebounds.

“We came out flat and played with no emotion,” said Flyers coach Kevin Sheridan. “We didn’t have a lot of turnovers but we weren’t very aggressive. We need to be more physical.”

The Flyers shot well as tehy hit 16-of-31 shots for 52 percent. However, they were beaten in the battle of the boards 24-16.

“They’ve got nice size and they have some good athletes,” said Sheridan.

DePriest scored 12 points in the first quarter as Rock Hill took an 18-7 lead.

Harvey had nine points in the second quarter while Butler and Davenport had four each and it was 31-20 at the half.

St. Joseph mounted a rally in the third quarter as Harvey scored seven points and Crossan five to cut the deficit to 38-33.

But Pierson scored seven points in the fourth quarter to offset seven points by Blackburn as the Redmen began to pull away.
