PORTSMOUTH — In a season of ups and downs, the Symmes Valley Vikings were on top Friday.

Shooting a season-best 52 percent, the Vikings rolled past the Portsmouth Notre Dame Titans 78-45 in a Southern Ohio Conference I game.

“We’ve been playing pretty good. We’ve just gone through those ups and downs and brief lapses,” said Vikings coach Alvin Carpenter. “We were up more tonight than down.”

Kris Tibbs had 19 points to lead five players in double figures. Chris Capper had 12 points and nine rebounds while Tyler Smith, Jacob Johnson, and Matt Tibbs scored 11 each.

Matt Tibbs scored seven points as Symmes Valley jumped ahead 20-9 in the first quarter.

“Our intensity has been pretty good to start the ball game. Our problem is we don’t know how to handle things when we get a big lead. We always go into a down slide, but then we step it back up in the third quarter,” said Carpenter.

Johnson had 6 points in the second quarter as the lead went to 38-21. Kris Tibbs had 9 points in the third quarter and it was 60-40.

Carpenter emptied his bench in the fourth quarter and seven different players scored.
