PROCTORVILLE — Chris Ward got on a roll and that kept the Fairland Dragons rolling.

Ward scored 11 straight points to turn a close game into a blowout as the Fairland Dragons remained unbeaten with a 61-38 win over the Coal Grove Hornets Friday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

“Chris (Ward) was huge for us in the third quarter. That was the key. They had to get out of their zone and go man,” said Fairland coach Chad Belville. “Ward is shooting the ball well.”

Ward finished with 15 points. Michael Lamb topped the Dragons (5-0, 2-0 OVC) with 17 points. Dustin Bumgardner grabbed 10 rebounds.

Fairland was up just 8-4 at the end of the first quarter. Cole Hatfield had nine points in first half — all on 3-pointers — as Fairland took a 26-18 halftime lead.

“The game was sloppy in the first half and we shot poorly the whole game. The second half we got some things straightened out and had more intensity and picked up our defense,” said Belville.

“Coal Grove is vastly improved and you’ve got to show up to play. Coal Grove played well defensively, especially in the first half.”

Lamb scored nine points and Ward eight in the third quarter as Fairland outscored the Hornets 22-12.

Ward hit three 3-pointers and two foul shots from the end of the third quarter to early in the fourth quarter as the lead went from 40-30 to 51-30.

“Once they started hitting, we started feeding those guys hard and heavy and it worked out,” said Belville.

Coal Grove (2-3, 0-2) was led by Eric Edens with 12 points.
