SOUTH POINT — A long talk went a long way.

An extended halftime talk sparked a strong second half as the South Point Pointers used a last-second shot by Zach Woody to post a 67-65 win over the River Valley Raiders in an Ohio Valley Conference game Friday.

“We went over some things at length at the half and we just played harder,” said Pointers coach Gary Norris. “We played a lot better in the third quarter. Our defense was a little bit better.”

In a game that featured seven lead changes and seven ties, Woody hit the game winning shot just before the final buzzer as the Pointers remained unbeaten.

“River Valley came out ready to play. They shot well and rebounded well. They’re going to beat some people,” said Norris.

Todd Mayo led the Pointers (5-0, 2-0) with 21 points. Beau Weed and Woody had 10 points each. Corey Taylor grabbed eight rebounds and Kyle Hughes had five assists.

Marcus Frasure had 19 points and Ryan Eggleton 12 to pace River Valley (2-2, 0-2).

After River Valley wiped out an eight-point South Point lead to start the fourth quarter, Chase Kratzenberg hit a 3-pointer to put South Point up 64-63 and Mayo sank one of two free throws to extend the lead to 65-63 with just 40 seconds left.

The Raiders tied the game with 19 seconds to play and then Woody hit a 15-footer with just four seconds left to give the Pointers the thrilling win.

The game was tied 13-13 after the first quarter. The Raiders went up 35-27 at the half.

Mayo scored 11 of his points in the first half to keep the Pointers close.

South Point outscored River Valley 11-2 to start the second half and went on to take 51-47 lead.
