Hornets rally past Vikings

WILLOW WOOD — The Coal Grove Hornets just need some time to get warmed up.

Trailing at the half, the Hornets used a strong third quarter to reverse their fortunes in a 57-48 win over the cold-shooting Symmes Valley Vikings Saturday.

The Vikings were just 17-of-75 from the field for 22.7 percent.

“We would have shot the ball better with our eyes closed,” said Vikings coach Alvin Carpenter.

Matt and Kris Tibbs scored six points each in the first quarter as the Vikings took a 15-9 lead.

Reece Rymer hit a 3-pointer and scored five points and David Bridges four more in the second quarter as Coal Grove cut the deficit to just 24-23 at the break.

Wayne Sparks knocked down seven of his 17 points in the third quarter as the Hornets outscored the Vikings 18-9 to go ahead 41-33.

In the fourth quarter, the Hornets were 8-of-14 from the line while the Vikings were 7-of-11. Chris Dirling had five points as Coal Grove outscored Symmes Valley 16-15 in the quarter.

Chris Capper and Jacob Johnson had seven points in the quarter the Hornets.

Besides Sparks, Rymer had 12 points to lead the offense for Coal Grove (5-3).

Johnson scored 16 points, Matt Tibbs 13 and Kris Tibbs 12 for the Vikings (5-3).
