WILLOW WOOD — The third quarter was pretty ugly. Pretty for the Chesapeake Lady Panthers, ugly for the Symmes Valley Lady Vikings.

Chesapeake used a big third quarter to pull away and beat the Lady Vikings 54-39 Thursday in a non-league game.

“We didn’t play well the first half, but in the third quarter we came out with some intensity. Our starters did well,” said Lady Panthers coach Sammy Gue.

Kimmie Bennett scored nine points and Allison Chapman had six more as Chesapeake outscored the Lady Vikings 24-5 to turn a 24-15 halftime lead into a 48-20 cushion.

“We were only down (nine) at the half and then the phantom third quarter showed its ugly head,” said Lady Vikings coach Lisa Bryant.

“Give Chesapeake credit. They came out in the second half and took it to us. We were out of position on defense and could not buy a shot on the offensive end.”

Bennett led the Lady Panthers (6-4) with 14 points and Chapman scored 12.

“Chapman played a great all-around game and Bennett ran the floor well,” said Gue. “(Sarah) Mayo distributed the ball well and Rachel Harris stepped up when we needed it.”

Jessie Morris had 10 points for the Lady Vikings (0-9). Haily Pelletier and Jennie Wilson added eight points each.

Symmes Valley was plagued with 16-for-59 shooting from the field and just 7-of-22 at the line.

“If we make our free throws, we are down by two points and maybe give ourselves a better opportunity to win,” said Bryant.
