PROCTORVILLE — Maybe the Fairland Dragons weren’t mentally at their game Friday, but there was enough left to play to win easily.

The sluggish Dragons still had enough firepower to breeze past the Huntington (W.Va.) St. Joseph Fighting Irish 73-40.

“We didn’t play well. Mentally we weren’t there,” said Fairland coach Chad Belville. “But we went to the bench in the second quarter and they provided a lot of enter for us.”

Fairland (9-0) led 12-6 at the end of the first quarter and saw the lead shrink to 12-10 at the start of the second quarter.

Belville wasted little time looking for the right combination and inserted some backups.

Chris Ward scored five points and Adam Berry hit a key basket as Fairland took a 33-21 lead at the half.

Fairland began to assert itself in the third quarter as Michael Lamb scored 11 points and Dustin Bumgardner scored four more off the block and the lead grew to 51-28.

“We came out the third quarter with some intensity. We got the ball inside to Michael and Dustin and we established ourselves on the boards,” said Belville.

Lamb and Bumgardner each scored 17 points. Bumgardner grabbed 10 rebounds and Cole Hatfield handed out seven assists.

Josh Chambers scored 13 for the Irish.
