Redmen tighten defense to beat South Gallia

CROWN CITY — When the game got tight, the Rock Hill Redmen decided to tighten things up.

Tied after three quarters, the Redmen tightened up their defensive pressure in the fourth quarter and beat the South Gallia Rebels 59-43 Friday in a non-league game.

“We held them to two points the last 10 minutes of the game and that was the key,” said Redmen coach Adam Simpson.

“Between the third and fourth quarters we challenged them to guard someone and they did and that’s what won the game.”

Wes Pierson had six points and Drew Kuehne four as Rock Hill outscored the Rebels 18-2 in the fourth quarter including a 14-0 run to end the game.

South Gallia was just 1-of-10 from the field in the fourth quarter. The only goal for the Rebels was by Micah Cardwell with 5:47 left that left the Redmen up 45-43.

Rock Hill was 10-of-12 from the foul line in the decisive quarter.

Kuehne had six points, Matt Matney five and Nathan Davenport four as Rock Hill took a 21-13 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The lead was 30-16 late in the second quarter as Matney scored eight points. But South Gallia came back to get with 32-27 at the half.

“We couldn’t put them away and that got their confidence going and it got their crowd into it,” said Simpson.

South Gallia went on a 14-6 run to begin the second half to take a 41-38 lead with two minutes left in the third quarter, but the Redmen rallied to tie the game 41-41 heading into the fourth quarter.

Matney led the Redmen (4-5) with 17 points and three assists. Kuehne scored 12 points while Davenport had 10 points, 13 rebounds, four steals, and two blocked shots.

Caleb McClanahan had 13 points and Tyler Duncan 12 for the Rebels (0-9).
