It’s not a good idea to get into a gunfight without any bullets.

The St. Joseph Flyers decided to disarm the East Tartans top guns in Friday’s rematch of the season opener at Sciotoville.

In the first meeting, East won 65-61 as Brad Collins got 15 points, Jordan Garrett and Tyler Mault had 13 points each, and Chase Dickerson scored 11 points.

This time Mault got 25 points but Collins had only six and Garrett and Dickerson failed to score.

”We did a good job recognizing where their shooters were. (Tyler) Mault scored, but we limited their other big guns,” said Sheridan. “We did a much better job rebounding and limiting their second chances.”

The Flyers big guns shot well. Chad Harvey was the new sheriff in town as he scored 27 points to go with 10 rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Caleb Blackburn gunned in 14 points to go with eight rebounds and David Crossan added 11 points and two assists.

“(Chad) was solid and consistent. That’s the key with him,” said Sheridan.

Harvey scored seven and Blackburn four as the Flyers took a 13-8 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Flyers (3-5) stretched the lead to 31-21 at the break as Harvey scored six, Blackburn five and Joey Basedow four.

With Harvey and Crossan combining for 10 points, St. Joseph stretched the lead to as many as 15 in the third quarter and the lead was 41-30 heading into the fourth quarter.

East (4-5) cut lead to three with less than three minutes to play, but Harvey was fouled and hit a pair of free throws to push the lead to five and the Flyers were 10-of-17 from the line down the stretch.

Harvey went 4-of-6 at the line and Crossan 2-for-2.

“We did a much better job defensively this time around. We gave up 65 points the last time and they had only 30 through three quarters,” said Sheridan.
