COAL GROVE — When you’re feeling a little rundown, the best thing to pick you up is scoring points.

Lots of them.

The Coal Grove Lady Hornets shook off a slow start and rolled past the Portsmouth West Lady Senators 71-20 Monday.

“We came out sluggish, but after we got things rolling in the second and third quarter, we were okay,” said Lady Hornets coach Nick Miller.

“Maybe it was because of our layoff. We won five in a row and then didn’t play for a week.”

Jordyn Cox had seven points and Brittany Harrison five and the Coal Grove lead was 16-8 at the end of the first quarter.

Cox had seven more points in the second quarter and Danielle Carpenter scored five as Coal Grove opened up a 34-10 halftime cushion.

Coal Grove got its offense in high gear with 26 points in the third quarter. Cox had 11 points while Keesha Wyatt added four to build an overwhelming 60-13 lead.

Cox finished with 25 points. Carpenter added nine points.

Coal Grove (10-7) plays at South Point Thursday in a battle for first place in the Ohio Valley Conference.
