Pointers walk past Redmen in OVC

PEDRO — It was the 1960s group The Ventures who played the instrumental hit song, “Walk - Don’t Run ’64.”

When the Rock Hill Redmen tried their own version of “Walk — Don’t Run ’08,” the South Point Pointers strummed right along as they remained unbeaten with a 44-36 win Friday to finish the Ohio Valley Conference 10-0.

“We’ve played some slow games and we try to adapt as we go,” said Pointers coach Gary Norris.

The slow play limited the Pointers to just 34 field goal attempts, but they made 17 for 50 percent.

Coach Adam Simpson said Rock Hill did its job to control the tempo, but 12-for-42 shooting from the field and 10-of-19 at the line negated the effort.

“Against a team that good you have to make layups and free throws. That’s a given and we didn’t do that,” said Simpson.

“We had a game plan and the guys carried it out. We did everything right but hit our shots. Our execution, effort and attitude were good. We didn’t hit our shots and they did and that was the ball game.”

Todd Mayo scored six points in the first quarter to give South Point a 10-6 lead. The Pointers led 20-11 at the half.

Rock Hill got within 25-23 in the third quarter as Mark DePriest scored five points and Matt Matney four, but the Pointers were able to surge back to a 29-23 lead at the end of the quarter.

Corey Taylor and Beau Weed scored four points each in the fourth quarter and Kyle Hughes was 3-for-4 at the foul line over the final minute to run the Pointers record to 19-0.

Taylor had 11 points and nine rebounds while Mayo got 10 points and five assists.

DePriest scored 13 and Matney nine to pace Rock Hill (11-9, 4-6). Nate Davenport grabbed 11 rebounds, Matney seven and Wes Pierson six.
