PROCTORVILLE — Tyler Shoemaker is no doctor, but he had the right medicine for his ill teammates.

With Kyle Rase and Kyle Webb both sick — Rase was shivering while wrapped in a coat before the game — Shoemaker hit a 14-footer with 11 seconds to play that gave the Chesapeake Panthers a thrilling 55-54 win over the Fairland Dragons Friday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

“We had guys sick and the game was going back-and-forth. It was a battle. It came down to making a play at the end and Tyler made a big one,” said Panthers coach Ryan Davis.

Fairland had take a 54-53 lead with under two minutes to play and with time running out missed the front end of a one-and-one situation.

The Panthers rebounded and Shoemaker hit his shot. The Dragons were unable to get off a good shot in their final possession.

“Give Chesapeake credit. They got the ball to Shoemaker and he pulled up and hit the jump shot,” said Fairland coach Chad Belville.

The game changed from a high-scoring first half to a slow pace in the second half.

Zach Jordan scored nine points and Dustin Bumgardner had six as Fairland took a 17-16 first quarter lead. Shoemaker had eight points for the Panthers.

Aaron Ross, Webb and Rase hit 3-pointers to start the second quarter and give Chesapeake the lead. However, Chris Ward drained three straight 3-pointers to end the half and the Dragons were up 38-33 at the half.

Fairland’s offense was shut down in the second half as the Dragons made just 6-of-21 shots including 3-of-12 in the third quarter as they scored only six points.

“At halftime we talked about getting ball inside and keeping them off the glass, but we looked lost and didn’t execute well in our offense. We settled for way too many jump shots and we took some quick shots and didn’t get the ball inside,” said Belville.

“Michael (Lamb) and Dustin combined for three shots in the third quarter and that was the difference.”

Chesapeake outscored the Dragons 13-6 in the third quarter to take a 46-44 lead.

Shoemaker had 19 points and 10 rebounds. Rase added 10 points for the Panthers (15-4, 8-2) who finished second in the OVC.

Lamb had 15 points and Bumgardner 12 points for Fairland (15-5, 6-4). Both had 10 rebounds while Cole Hatfield handed out eight assists.
