JACKSON — The Fairland Dragons did their impersonation of the Kentucky Derby. They were off and running.

Fairland began running from the outset and breezed past the Crooksville Ceramics 69-32 Wednesday in the Division III sectional tournament semifinals.

Michael Lamb scored 10 points, Cole Hatfield drained a pair of 3-pointers and Zach Jordan had six more points including a triple as the Dragons took a 25-4 first quarter lead.

“We ran the floor extremely well. We got out in transition and got some easy baskets and we hit some 3’s that loosened up their zone,” said Dragons coach Chad Belville.

“We talked to the kids that it was important to get off to a quick start. When you’re playing an underdog and you let them hang around, you can have your hands full. We couldn’t have asked for a better start.”

Lamb not only had a good start but a historic finish. Lamb scored 29 points to give him 1,000 for his career.

“It was a great moment for him and for our team. Michael’s a phenomenal athlete and his teammates know how to get him the ball,” said Belville.

Chris Ward and Lamb had four points in the second quarter as Fairland opened up a 38-11 cushion.

“We were sloppy on offense but our defensive pressure was still pretty good,” said Belville. “In the third quarter we had a big lead and lost some focus.”

The Dragons led grew to 49-19 after three quarters. Lamb got his 1,000th point with a pair of free throws in the fourth quarter.

Hatfield had 10 points, eight rebounds and five assists and Dustin Bumgardner grabbed eight rebouns.

“Tyler Godby played a tremendous game defensively off the bench. Crooksville was a big team and we had to get pressure on their guards,” said Belville.

“The defensive play of our guards like Cole Hatfield and Zach Jordan was big. It was a good team effort.”

Fairland (16-5) plays Alexander at 8 p.m. Saturday at Jackson High School in the sectional finals.

Aaron Swingle scored 10 points for the Ceramics (2-19).
