Area wrestlers earn district berths

NELSONVILLE — Step one has been completed. Step two awaits.
The boys Division III sectional wrestling tournament was held at Nelsonville-York High School and four area wrestlers advanced to the district tournament this weekend at Heath High School.
The top four finishers at the sectional tournament advance to the district tournament. The top four in the district qualify for the state tournament.
Leading the qualifiers was Fairland’s Chris Jackson who was the 152-pound division champion. Jackson easily bested Eric Shiflett of Zane Trace 14-1.
Finishing second in the 145-pound class was Fairland’s Zac Fannin who was pinned by Jared Border at 4:33.
Garrett Wireman of Fairland placed third as he won a 3-1 decision over Justin Smith of Waterford in the 140-pound division.
Finishing fourth at 125 pounds was Thomas Lewis of Chesapeake who dropped a tough 8-6 decision to Dean Miller of Waterford.
Fairland had three wrestlers just miss qualifying as they placed fifth.
At 112 pounds, Eric Doerr of Fairland pinned Anthony Cangemi of Nelsonville-York. Steven Walker won a 1-0 decision over Benny Grey of Wellston at 215 pounds, and Joe Whitley pinned Thomas Moore of Shenandoah in 0:36 of the 285-ound division.
Taking sixth place for Fairland was Nathanial Brewer who lost an 18-9 decision to Trevor Arthur of Wellston.
