Pioneers get past Chesapeake

WAYNE, W.Va. — The Wayne Pioneers scored twice in the fifth inning and held on to edge the Chesapeake Panthers 3-2 Wednesday.

Chesapeake took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Kyle Rase doubled and Travis Zimmerman singled.

Wayne tied the game in the third and went ahead in the fifth on a walk, an RBI double by Joe Thompson and Austin Mills’ base hit.

The Panthers mounted a rally in the seventh when Zimmerman was safe on an error, John Baise put down a sacrifice bunt, and Phillip Mandt had an RBI single. But the next batter struck out to end the game.

Chesapeake (0-1) plays at Huntington, W.V., Thursday.
