An Ironton woman is dead after being struck by a train early Sunday morning.

The victim was identified as Charlene Ash, 49, whose last known address was 2520 S. Eighth St., Ironton Police Chief Jim Carey said.

At 3:28 a.m. Sunday, Norfolk-Southern, railroad employees notified Ironton police that a woman was last seen lying on a railroad track at the Jefferson Street crossing and had been struck by a passing train.

“What we know is, she made a phone call from the Fuzzy Duck and then left there and began walking along the railroad tracks to the intersection where she was struck by the train,” Carey said. “The engineer and conductor said they saw her lying on the tracks and began blowing their horn and she was attempting to get up but couldn’t get up in time.”

The train was traveling north though the city at the time of the incident.

Carey said the investigation into Ash’s death continues.
