AID — This is the kind of game you like to play, especially if you win.
The Symmes Valley Lady Vikings slipped past the Portsmouth Notre Dame Lady Titans 5-4 Monday in a Southern Ohio Conference game.
“We jumped on them and I thought it would be enough, but it wasn’t. Our kids never laid down and neither did their kids. It was a well-played game on both sides,” said Lady Vikings coach Jeff “Odie” Estep.
Symmes Valley jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning.
Erica Corn and Nikki Nance singled and Libby Ash had a two-run double. Emily Bowling hit into a fielder’s choice as Ash went to third base where she scored on a wild pitch.
Notre Dame got a run in the fourth and three in the sixth to take a 4-3 lead.
The Lady Vikings tied the game in the bottom of the seventh.
With one out, Jessie Morris singled and Chelsea Wall was safe on a pair of errors to put runners at second and third. Morris scored the tying run when Haily Pelletier hit into a fielder’s choice.
The score remained tied until Ash led off the ninth with a base hit. Courtesy runner Brittany Foster went to second on a wild pitch and scored when Bowling hit a soft fly ball singled to center field.
Ash struck out nine and walked two as she got a complete game victory.
Symmes Valley (4-1, 2-0) visits Eastern Wednesday.
In the Valley of Thunder, Symmes Valley beat Brunswick 6-3 Friday and lost to Wellston 6-2 on Saturday.
