Walks prove costly to Flyers

If walks will haunt, Monday must have seemed like Friday the 13th to the St. Joseph Flyers.

The South Gallia Rebels used 14 walks to beat the Flyers 12-6.

“We’ve got to throw strikes We just can’t be putting people on base and not make them put the ball in play,” said Flyers coach Greg Bryant.

“And we didn’t play very smart. When you add all that up, it’s not going to equal a very successful night.”

After South Gallia went up 2-0 in the first, St. Joseph tied the game in the bottom of the inning

Chad Harvey walked and Payton Blair got a bunt single to put runners on the corners. Blair stole second and Harvey scored on a throwing error. Caleb Blackburn grounded out to score Blair.

The Flyers took a 3-2 lead in the third.

Harvey singled, stole second and third, and Blackburn grounded out as Harvey scored.

But seven walks over the next two innings enabled South Gallia to score 10 runs.

St. Joseph came back with two runs in the fifth inning to get within 12-5.

With one out, Blair doubled and Blackburn and Pat Gagai reached on errors for a run. Dylan Klein singled home the second run.

The Flyers added a run in the seventh inning when Gagai walked and Klein and Joey Basedow reached on errors.

St. Joseph (1-1) plays at Tolsia, W.Va., Wednesday.
