HAVERHILL — Going deep dug the Ironton Fighting Tigers a big hole.

The Wheelersburg Pirates went deep three times in the first couple of innings en route to a 12-1 win over Ironton Tuesday in a five-inning non-league game.

“They jumped out early and we just never recovered,” said Ironton coach Tobey Schreck. “They’ve got a bunch of seniors and everybody back from last year. They’ve got a nice team.”

Wes Lyon led off the game with a fly ball home run that just cleared the fence. Adam Wamsley walked and Aaron Hopper hit a two-run homer and the Pirates led 3-0.

Lyon doubled in a run and Wamsley hit a two-run homer in the third and it was 6-0.

The Pirates had five hits in the third inning as they scored four times to lead 10-0.

Ironton (1-3) got its run in the bottom of the inning when John Schweickart singled, Josh Pancake walked and Ethan Preston doubled.

Jeremy Moore and Ryan O’Leary each singled for Ironton’s other two hits.

The Fighting Tigers play at Jackson Wednesday, host Gallipolis Thursday and visit Gallipolis Friday in three straight league games.
