Rase, Panthers rally by Oak Hill

CHESAPEAKE — It was a “Rase” to home plate.

Kyle Rase drove in the tying run and raced home on an error to score the winning run as the Chesapeake Panthers rallied to beat the Oak Hill Oaks 9-8 Tuesday.

Trailing 8-6, Chesapeake scored three times in the sixth to take the lead.

With one out Clinton Baise was hit by a pitch. Matt Angle singled to put runners on the corners and then he stole second.

Bryon Huff hit a sacrifice fly and it was 8-7 and Rase followed with a triple to tie the game. Oak Hill tried to throw out Rase at third base and the ball got loose allowing Rase to score the winning.

Huff came on and pitched a scoreless seventh inning to save the win for Phillip Mandt.

Oak Hill jumped in front 4-0 in the top of the first inning, but the Panthers got two runs in the bottom of the inning.

Clinton Baise walked, Angle singled and, after a double play, Rase singled and Travis Zimmerman had a two-run double.

The Oaks scored three more runs in the second to lead 7-2.

The Panthers got within 7-4 in the fourth inning.

Angle doubled, Jon Baise walked, and the runners moved up on a passed ball. Clinton Baise then delivered a two-run single.

The Oaks (0-5) scored in the fifth to go up 8-4, but the Panthers answered with two runs in their half of the inning.

Huff singled and Rase doubled. Mandt ground out as courtesy runner Gabriel Freyre scored. Jon Baise got his first career hit with a single to score Rase.

Rase went 3-4 and Zimmerman 2-4 with two runs batted in.

Chesapeake (1-2) hosts Coal Grove Wednesday.
