Lady Panthers bounce Lady Irish

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — When the umpire yelled “Play ball!” to begin Tuesday’s game, the Chesapeake Lady Panthers took it to heart.

The Lady Panthers made sure they put the ball in play as they beat the Huntington St. Joseph Lady Fighting Irish 11-3.

“All three of their kids throw pretty hard, so we just put the ball in play,” said Lady Panthers coach Aaron Rice. “And Allison (Chapman) pitched pretty well. We’ll take that kind of effort every day.”

Chapman pitched a six-hitter for the win. She struck out 14 and did not walk a batter.

The Lady Panthers got a run in the first inning when Nikki Lindsey and Sarah Mayo were hit by pitches and Chapman reached on an error.

The lead went to 3-0 in the third inning.

Mayo drew a one-out walk, Chapman singled, both moved up on a ground out and scored on a dropped fly ball.

Chesapeake pushed across two more runs in the fourth inning.

Hannah Henderson was safe on error, Kimmie Bennett walked, Casey Kirk sacrificed the runners up, and Lindsey had a two-run single.

The Lady Panthers opened up a 9-0 lead in the sixth.

Lindsey was hit by a pitch, Mayo was safe on an error, and Chapman singled home a run. Shelby Pike walked to load the bases, Courtney Heffner walked to forced in a run, and Henderson had a two-run single.
