Jackson outscores Fighting Tigers

HAVERHILL — Dow Chemical Field is a hitter’s park. That’s bad news for pitchers, especially the youthful Ironton Fighing Tigers.

Ironton continued it’s offensive production, but the pitching was unable to do its job as the Jackson Ironmen outscored the Fighting Tigers 20-8 Monday in a Southeastern Ohio Conference game.

“We’ve hit the ball pretty well all season, but pitching is the key. We haven’t been able to stop the other team’s offense,” said Ironton coach Tobey Schreck.

Jackson combined 15 hits with 11 walks and five hit batsmen. The Ironmen had six extra base hits including five home runs.

Ironton (5-8, 2-5) generated plenty of offense. The Fighting Tigers had 10 hits with Nick Lewis spanking out a pair of doubles and Geoff White drilling a solo home run.

Ryan O’Leary, Ethan Preston and Lewis all went 2-4. Josh Pancake, Jeremy Moore and Bryron Brammer all had a base hit.

After Jackson got a run in the first, Ironton came back to take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the inning.

With one out, Ryan O’Leary singled, moved up on a passed ball, and scored when Lewis reached on an error. Preston had a two-out RBI single to cap the rally.

But Jackson exploded for 10 runs in the second inning with the aid of two walks, two hit batsmen, three errors and a pair of home runs.

Ironton got within 11-6 in the bottom of the third inning.

Keith Wetzel and Pancake walked and O’Leary singled. Lewis doubled home two and Moore and Preston each drove in a run with a ground out.

Jackson scored four times in the fourth to open up a 15-6 lead.

Pancake walked, Lewis doubled and Moore singled for a run in the fourth and White hit a solo home run in the fifth and it was 15-8.

The Ironmen put the game away with a run in the sixth and four more in the seventh.

Ironton hosts Gallipolis on Wednesday.
