Flyers can#8217;t overcome mistakes
Baseball mistakes don’t come with an eraser.
Mistakes proved to be the St. Joseph Flyers downfall as they were outscored 12-10 by the River Valley Raiders Thursday.
“Walks, costly errors and we didn’t make plays when we had to and they made some extraordinary plays. And we stranded 12 runners in scoring position,” said Flyers coach Greg Bryant.
St. Joseph took a 2-0 lead in the second inning when Caleb Blackburn walked, Chad Harvey singled, a balk, and Joe “The Shoe” Unger’s two-run single.
River Valley tied the game in the fourth but the Flyers scored twice in the bottom of the inning.
Harvey walked, Pat Gagai singled and a throwing error scored a run. Unger put down a sacrifice bunt and Levi Hopkins laid down a squeeze bunt.
The Raiders got three runs to lead 5-4 in the fifth only to have the Flyers answer with five in their half of the frame.
Jerrod Laber singled, Blackburn was hit by a pitch and Harvey’s sacrifice bunt was thrown away as a run scored.
Gagai walked and Joey Basedow had a two-run single. Payton Blair singled home Gagai and Dylan Klein and Laber walked to force in a run.
Justice hit a to-run homer in the sixth inning to get River Valley within 9-7.
Three walks, an error and three hits enabled the Raiders to score five runs in the seventh inning and take a 12-9 lead.
The Flyers got a run in the bottom of the inning when Aaron Murphy reached on an error, Blair and Laber walked, and Blackburn’s screaming ground ball down the first base line was knocked down and went for a force out as a run scored.
“If Caleb’s ball gets through, we tie the game,” said Bryant.
St. Joseph (6-4) hosts Manchester in a 4 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday.
