GALLIPOLIS — Things aren’t always how they seem.

Things seemed to be going well for the Ironton Fighting Tigers until the end of the game. Gallipolis scored three times in the bottom of the sixth inning and beat Ironton 6-4 Thursday in an SEOAL game.

“Our pitching was good, our hitting was good, we just couldn’t get the big play when we needed it,” said Ironton coach Tobey Schreck.

Nick Lewis, who missed Wednesday’s game due to an illness, went 4-for-4 as Ironton out-hit the Blue Devils 11-to-7.

“We hit well, we just didn’t have enough clutch hits,” said Schreck.

The Blue Devils got two unearned runs in the first inning.

Austin Roush singled and J.P. Finnicum and Cody Noble both reached on errors as a run scored. Nick Stevens singled to drive in the second run.

Gallipolis got a run in the third inning on four walks.

Ironton (5-10, 2-7) got a run in the fourth on singles by Geoff White, Byron Brammer and Wes Runyon.

But Gallipolis opened up a 6-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning.

With one out Finnicum singled, Noble walked and Stevens unloaded a three-run homer.

“Nick (Lewis) pitched pretty well. He just hung a curveball that one time,” said Schreck. “Josh (Pancake) struggled with his control a little, but he didn’t throw too bad.”

Ironton refused to quit by putting together a rally in the seventh inning that fell two runs short.

Keith Wetzel and Pancake walked to start the inning and Ryan O’Leary doubled home a run. Lewis singled in a run and Ethan Preston drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.

Ironton (5-10, 2-7) hosts Portsmouth Friday in a league game.
