COAL GROVE — It was night for team and individual performances.

The Fairland Dragons got a little of both as they won the Coal Grove Giovanni’s Pizza Invitational meet Friday.

“There were some times individually in some races that stood out. There were some individual performers who stepped up and they made the meet what it was,” said Hornets coach Jay Lucas.

“Fairland is so strong. They have a really nice team.”

Fairland racked up 164 points with Coal Grove second with 113. South Point had 91, Spring Valley 79, Alexander 32, Chesapeake 31, Rock Hill 8 and South Gallia 5.

Fairland’s Aaron Ward ran a 15.4 in the 110 hurdles and 41.85 in the 300 hurdles to take first place.

Eddie Adkins won the 800 and 1600, Chris Gibson took the 400, and Matt Bloomfield claimed the 200. The 4×400 relay won and the 4×200 relay set a meet record.

One of the unique performances came from Coal Grove’s Daniel “Oakie” Haynes who won the 100-meter dash at 11.4 seconds, was second in the long jump and third in the pole vault.

Haynes put together all this while playing in a baseball game on the adjacent field.

“Oakie coming in and doing what he does from playing baseball has helped,” said Lucas. “We’re coming along. We still have a ways to go, but we’re working hard and we’re getting there.”

Coal Grove’s Frank Delawder won the shot put.

South Point’s Drew Lynd was the top point winner in the meet with 26.5 points. He won the long jump and high jump and was fourth in the 200 meters.
