County jobless rate drops

Lawrence County’s unemployment rate dipped a bit last month and remained below the state’s unemployment rate.

In March, Lawrence County posted a 4.9 percent jobless rate. Ohio’s unemployment rate was 5.7 percent in March, up from 5.3 percent in February, according to data from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.

Lawrence County posted a 5.4 percent unemployment rate in February and 5.3 percent in January.

Lawrence County continues to fare better than any of its nearest neighbors. Last month Scioto County posted a 7.5 percent unemployment rate; Pike County’s jobless rate was 10.2 percent. Jackson County’s March unemployment rate was 8.4 percent while Gallia’s was 6.4 percent.

Lawrence County’s jobless rate was only slightly higher than Hamilton County (4.8 percent) and Franklin County (4.7 percent) and lower than Cuyahoga (6.2 percent).
