AID — The difference was a throw.
The Portsmouth Clay Lady Panthers used a throwing error to score the game’s only run as they beat the Symmes Valley Lady Vikings 1-0 Friday in a Southern Ohio Conference game.
“It was a heck of a ball game except for one throw,” said Lady Vikings coach Jeff “Odie” Estep. “But that didn’t beat us. We just couldn’t get a clutch hit. We just need a little hit someplace and we couldn’t get it.”
Clay’s Cami Groves got the win as she struck out seven and walked one. The Lady Vikings’ Libby Ash fanned six and didn’t walk a batter. Both gave up four hits.
“Groves struck out 15 the last time and we cut it down to seven,” said Estep. “Libby had a heck of a game. They only hit three balls out of the infield.”
Symmes Valley had runners at second and third bases in the second, fourth and fifth innings but couldn’t score.
Clay got the game’s only run in the second inning.
With one out, Tori Osborne singled, Holly Hemphill reached on an error, and with two outs a throwing error at first base allowed Osborne to score.
Symmes Valley (12-5, 6-3) plays at Portsmouth Notre Dame on Monday.
