— The Lawrence County Fair is known for many things — being a showcase for the county’s 4-H members, the food, the rides and of course, the entertainment.

This year’s lineup includes all the essentials: music, thrills and the mainstay of old cars smashing violently into each other.

“We try to get entertainment that people like,” said Doug Clark, the president of the Lawrence County Fair board. “The most popular is the demolition derby. We are only having one this year because we are having a little problem getting junk cars. Probably because of junk metal prices.”

The fair begins July 5 and runs until July 12.

Here’s a rundown of the events: July 5 and 6 at 7 p.m., the dirt track will be turned into a motocross arena; July 7, the Ohio State Tractor Pullers Association tractor pull; the entertainment kicks off early on July 8. Ironton band, Fat Mac Daddy, will play at 6 p.m. At 8 p.m., there wills be thrills and possibly spills with the return of the Thrill Show.

On July 9, two country music stars will perform, beginning at 7 p.m., on the Lawrence County Fair stage. First up, is Ashton Shepherd and then James Otto. On July 10, the Colgate Country Showdown which features local singers kicks off at 7 p.m. and on July 11, there will be bull riding.

On July 12, old cars are turned into scrap metal as drivers from around the Tri-State go at it in the demolition derby at 7:30 p.m.

“The Motocross is probably the favorite among younger people,” Clark said.

Clark said he is excited to see the country singers Sheperd and Otto.

“They are two good singing acts,” he said. “I think weather permitting we will have as big a crowd as we did last year for Kelly Pickler.”

Otto is a member of Nashville’s MuzikMafia which has produced such artists as Big & Rich and Gretchen Wilson. His song, “Just Got Started Lovin’ You,” has hit the top of the country music charts.

Shepherd’s debut single, “Takin’ Off This Pain” peaked at No. 20 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs.

The Colgate Country Showdown is the finale for radio station WTCR’s singing showcase of local talent.

“There are some pretty good entertainers,” Clark said. “We have some talent here in the Tri-State.”

And the thrill may be gone after this year when it comes to the Thrill Show.

“What they tell us is that is the last one on the road and it may be their last year,” Clark said. “I don’t know whether it’s gas prices or whether they are retiring. I don’t know if anyone will pick up the show. It’s always been a mainstay of the fairs.”

Clark said he expects in the future to have more country music acts, if they can get the sponsorship.

“It seems to draw the biggest crowds,” he said.

Daily admission to the fair is $7.
