The Future Farmers of America and 4-H members showed off their hard work and good-looking rabbits Monday morning.

Kaylyn Haas, 19-year-old Kitts Hill Willing Worker, won Grand Champion Market Rabbit and Kristen Estep, 15-year-old Scottown Farmerette, won Reserve Champion Market Rabbit.

Haas said there are a number of qualities a champion rabbit must have.

“It just all comes down to the genetics of a rabbit, the time you spend trying to tame them down and getting their fur slicked,” Haas said.

Estep said she made sure her rabbits were well hydrated and kept cool. She said her rabbits’ fur smooth fur helped her win her title.

“I really brushed them this year,” Estep said. “I also think the bigger cage so they could exercise helped, too,” Estep said.

Haas said she has been competing in the Market Rabbit competition for six years. She said she won Reserve Champion two years ago. Her sister won Grand Champion the past two years.

Estep said she has been competing in the Market Rabbit competition for about five years. She has placed and won in her class, but this is the first time she has won Grand or Reserve Champion.
