Kerns, Holtzapfel, Morgan win top honors

PORTSMOUTH — When the final putt dropped, three local youth golfers were atop the leaderboard.

Nathan Kerns in the 16-18 age division, Andy Holtzapfel in the 13-15 age group, and Brent Morgan in the 10-12 age bracket came away as the Players of the Year in the final Tri-State Junior Golf Circuit standings.

The tour finished its summer tournaments with the Monster Energy Drink Classic Monday at the Portsmouth Elks Country Club.

Holtzapfel tied with Nick Saunders at 81 for first-place in the first flight. Overall, Holtzapfel was the easy Player of the Year champion with 157.5 points to runner-up Saunders 82.5 total.

Kerns did not play in Monday’s tournament. He is currently playing in an American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) tournament in Mississippi.

Kerns, who also won the top award last year in the 16-18 age group, had 92.6 points to finish ahead of Brian Corder who had 75 points.

Morgan was another back-to-back Player of the Year champion as he won the top honor in the 10-12 age group again.

Morgan racked up 155 points to easily outdistance runner-up Bobby Welch who had 99.5 points.

Morgan tied for second in Monday’s tournament with a 48, one stroke behind winner Jacob Albrecht.

Josh Zornes, a teammate of Kerns and Holtzapfel on the Ironton golf team,celebrated his first year competing on the TSJGC by finishing third in the 13-15 division.
