COAL GROVE— It’s an annual event meant to bring the Coal Grove community together for family fun.

The annual block party, sponsored by Memorial United Methodist Church in Coal Grove will be 12-4 p.m. Saturday at the church. Again this year, there will be inflatables and other games for the children and entertainment throughout the afternoon. There will also be a health fair, compliments of Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital in Russell, Ky., watermelon eating and seed spitting contests, cornhole games and white elephant bingo.

“Everybody brings items, may be they got for Christmas or their birthday that they don’t really want and these items are used as prizes for the bingo game,” Sally McFarland, outreach and witness chairperson, said. “I think it’s going to be exciting and we have some pretty nice stuff.”

There will also be free food— turkey and roast pork, soup beans and a selection of cakes and pies that are also part of the annual cake and pie bakeoff contest.

“It’s a big war,” McFarland said. “Everybody thinks they’re the best cook.”

At 12:30 p.m. the Christian rock group Rev II Ten will perform, followed by a puppet show at 2 p.m. and bingo at 3 p.m.

“We do everything as a gift to the community,” Memorial UMC pastor, the Rev. Ruth Carter-Crist, said. “We want to reach out and let people know they can enjoy Christian fellowship in this setting.”
