Marshall nips Mephis, 17-16

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Quarterback Mark Cann completed 14 of 28 passes for 224 yards and the go-ahead touchdown as the Marshall Thundering Herd beat the Memphis Tigers 17-16 Saturday night in their Conference-USA opener.

Darius Passmore caught six passes for 128 yards including an 18-yard touchdown pass with four seconds left in the third quarter that put the Herd up 17-13.

Darius Marshall ran 27 times for 140 yards for Marshall (2-1, 1-0 C-USA). He had a 40-yard touchdown run just one minute into the game that gave the Herd a 7-0 lead.

Matt Reagan booted a 44-yard field goal with 5:24 left in the half to get Memphis within 7-3, but Craig Ratanamorn kick a 31-yard field goal with 44 seconds on the clock to put the Herd up 10-3.

Reagan had a 22-yard field goal with 10:41 on the third quarter clock that cut the Herd lead to 10-6.

Memphis (0-3, 0-1) got the lead at 13-10 with 5:01 on the clock as quarterback Will Hudgens hit Earnest Williams with a 4-yard scoring pass.

After Passmore’s touchdown catch, Memphis quarterback Arkelon Hall hit Maurice Jones with a 53-yard pass to the Marshall 8-yard line with 11:31 to play. But a run for no gain and two incomplete passes forced Reagan to kick a 25-yard field goal with 8:14 to go and it was 17-16.

Hall finished 28 of 51 for 364 yards.
